Hanuman Janmutsav – Celebrating the Birth of Lord Hanuman
Hanuman Janmutsav is a sacred Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of lord Hanuman, one of the most revered and beloved deities in Hinduism. Observed with deep devotion across India, this auspicious day honours Lord Hanuman’s extraordinary strength, unwavering faith and selfless service. The festival is usually celebrated on Chaitra Purnima according to the Hindu lunar calendar and in 2026; it falls in early April (date may vary regionally). Devotees gather in temples and homes to offer prayers and seek his blessings for courage, protection and spiritual strength.
He is lovingly known as Anjaneya, as he is the beloved son of mother Anjana. This name reflects his divine birth and reminds devotees of the blessings and purity that come from a mother’s love. Another popular name is Pavan Putra or Vayu Putra, meaning the son of the wind God Vayu. Just like the wind, Lord Hanuman is powerful, swift and present everywhere to protect those who seek help.
He is widely known as Bajrangbali, a name that symbolizes immense strength and courage. “Bajrang” refers to a body as strong as thunderbolt and “Bali” means powerful. This name highlights his unmatched physical and spiritual power. Another affectionate name is Maruti, which again connects him with the wind and represents his energy, speed and life force.
Devotees also lovingly call him Sankat Mochan, meaning the remover of troubles and difficulties. People believe that remembering Lord Hanuman with faith helps remove fear, obstacles and negativity from life. His devotion to Lord Rama is considered one of the greatest examples of loyalty and dedication in history.

The life and deeds of Lord Hanuman are beautifully described in the epic Ramayana, where he emerges as the greatest devotee of lord Rama. His devotion to Lord Rama is considered the highest example of bhakti (pure devotion). When Goddess Sita was abducted by Ravana, lord Hanuman crossed the vast ocean to Lanka, located her and delivered Rama’s message of hope. His courage was unmatched, yet he remained humble and dedicated solely to serving his Lord. One of the most celebrated incidents from the Ramayana is when he lifted the entire Sanjeevani mountain to save Lakshmana’s life, demonstrating that true strength is guided by devotion and righteousness.
Hanuman Janmutsav is observed with special prayers, temple visits and the chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa. Devotees offer sindoor, flowers and sweets like boondi and laddoos to the deity. Many observe fasts and participate in bhajans and spiritual gatherings. Temples are decorated beautifully and in several places, grand processions are organized with devotional singing and celebrations that reflect faith and unity.
Spiritually, it reminds us that real power lies not just in physical strength but also in faith, humility, discipline and service. Lord Hanuman teaches us to overcome fear, remain steadfast in difficult times and dedicate our abilities to a higher purpose. His life is a timeless message that with devotion, courage and righteousness, even the impossible becomes possible.
